  • Less than a boiler

no flue, no burner and no gas safety check, but the coil, filter, cylinder and controls still need a yearly look.

  • About £120–£250

for a typical annual service in Leicester.

  • Protects your warranty

most manufacturers' extended warranties depend on a yearly service record.

Why service a heat pump?

Three reasons. A clean, correctly set-up heat pump uses less electricity. Small problems — a clogging filter, a drifting sensor — get caught before they become breakdowns. And most manufacturers require it for their extended warranty.

What the engineer does

  1. Outside

Cleans the outdoor coil, checks the fan and fixings, and clears anything blocking airflow. In a Leicester back yard, bins and bikes stored against the unit are a common culprit.

  2. Water side

Checks system pressure, cleans the magnetic filter, and checks the inhibitor. Older Leicester heating circuits often carry sludge that collects in the filter.

  3. Cylinder

Tests safety valves and the expansion vessel, and checks the coil for scale. Severn Trent's water in Leicester is hard, typically 220–280 mg/l.

  4. Refrigerant

Checks operating pressures and temperatures. Anything needing the circuit opened requires an F-Gas certified engineer.

  5. Controls

Reads the fault log, checks settings and weather compensation, and compares performance with the commissioning record.

What it costs

Expect about £120–£250 for a standard service in Leicester, with any parts extra. Some installers include the first year's service in the installation price, so check your paperwork.

Between services: what you can do

  • Keep the outdoor unit clear of leaves, snow and stored items.
  • Check the system pressure gauge every month or two.
  • Note any error codes and when they appear.
  • Leave the heating running steadily rather than switching it off and on.
  • Clean or replace room thermostat batteries if your controller uses them.

Servicing FAQs

Is servicing required by law?

No. Unlike a gas boiler in a rented home, there's no legal annual check for a heat pump. It's a warranty and efficiency matter.

How long does it take?

Around one to two hours.

Do I need to be in?

Yes, or someone who can give access to the cylinder, controller and outdoor unit.

I'm a landlord. Do I need to service my tenants' heat pump?

It isn't a legal requirement like a gas safety check, but it protects the warranty and keeps tenants' bills down, and you remain responsible for keeping the heating in repair.

My heat pump was installed under the Warm Homes grant. Who services it?

Check the paperwork from the council's scheme. Some schemes include aftercare; otherwise any heat pump-trained engineer can service it.
